NEARLY 100 people have been arrested so far this year for malicious communications, a Freedom of Information (FOI) request has revealed.
The data for 2025, which is up to May 19, shows that 99 people have been arrested under either section 127 of the Communications Act 2003 and Section 1 of the Malicious Communications Act 1988.
In 2024, 263 were arrested, with 237 being arrested in 2023, the FOI request shows.
In the past ten years, 2022 saw the most arrests at 314, with there being the least number of arrests in 2016 when the figure was 137.
There were a total of 2470 arrests since 2015.
For a communication to be considered malicious under the Malicious Communications Act 1988, it must be shown that the sender intended to cause distress or anxiety.
