Residents in Forde Park, Newton Abbot, have welcomed the prospect of an end to a parking free-for-all but are worried the problem will simply be shifted to neighbouring streets.

The leafy residential area could soon be bristling with pay and display machines, no parking zones and residents-only bays.

The moves have been proposed by County Hall in response to complaints as the number of commuters unwilling to pay for parking in town and at the nearby station, where the daily rate is £6.10, has grown.

'When I moved here 12 years ago you could fire a shotgun and be lucky to hit a car but in the last five years it has increased tremendously. it's a nightmare,' said resident Michael Joyce.

Fellow resident Cllr Gordon Hook agreed.
