TEN objectors told Teignbridge Licensing Sub-committee on Monday of nuisance from music noise and cars at The Lord Haldon Hotel. The hotel, at Dunchideock, was applying to vary its licence in its meeting at Forde House on Monday. Ten neighbours wrote to oppose the application on the grounds of noise nuisance from music, particularly live music, and from cars, late at night. Several attended the meeting at Forde House, newton Abbot, on Monday to speak against any extension of licensing hours. They raised the point that they were not allowed to extend their properties as this would increase traffic on the narrow lanes, but traffic would increase if the hotel varied its licence. Mr Beynon, owner of nearby Haldon Grange Gardens, said the hotel shared his water supply and took more than its fair share. Another neighbour feared criminal elements would be attracted to the village by the late licencing hours. The parish council supported the objectors. Manager Victoria Nichols and area manager Stuart Hayes, for the hotel, said they wanted to clarify anomalies in the opening hours, and that the new hours were in some cases a reduction of late nights 'We are not a night club and we will not be holding rock festivals,' promised Mr Hayes: 'We don't want to cause a nuisance.' According to some Dunchideock residents the hotel already was a nuisance. They complained of fireworks upsetting pets, bagpipe music, piped music played in the gardens and flashing, intrusive car headlights. The sub-committee decision conditionally approved the variation of licensing hours. The conditions were that the windows and doors of the hotel should be closed after 11pm; that the fire door which accesses the drive should only be used in emergencies; and that public notices requesting customers to leave quietly should be displayed at the exits of the hotel. The new licensing hours for the hotel will be Monday to Sunday from 10am to midnight (entertainment, live and recorded music, dance or similar performances). Alcohol will be legally permitted to be sold from 10am to 1am Monday to Sunday and late night refreshment is allowed from 11am to 1am Monday to Sunday.
