A NEW event for book lovers is coming to Ashburton tomorrow, October 7.
The town’s arts centre is hosting the very first East Dartmoor Literary Day.
It’s been organised by local author and publisher Chris Robillard, who said: ‘After talking to several writers, teachers and the art centre, we have organised this new event, which will start at 10am and includes a book fair, story telling and poetry reading.’
There’s a wartime theme to much of the day, with experts giving their own insight into both world wars and one particular book receiving its first public airing.
Chris explained: ‘There will be a number of book launches including one called A Dartmoor Doctor from Ashburton in wartime. This is a fascinating story which has never been told before. It’s incredible.’
Among the presentations will be a talk by Professor Kent Fedorowich, an expert on 1914-18 war in the area and who helped co-ordinate the First World War exhibition in Exeter.
Another speaker, Debbey Clitheroe, who survived the recent BBC2 ‘Secret Agent Selection: WW2’ programme, will give a talk on the Special Operations Executive’s contribution during the Second World War.
For anyone who wants to try their hand at writing their own stories there’ll be something to inspire them on the day. Chris said: ‘We will have a short story competition for different ages, which has been circulated to local schools in the area, and there’ll be help and advice for those who want to write and publish their own work.
