LATE night revellers will soon be able to get a bus back to Newton Abbot from Torquay and Brixham in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The number 12 bus currently stops serving Newton Abbot after 00.15am on Sundays, and terminates at Cary Parade, Torquay.
But from Saturday, May 30 there will be night buses from Sherborne Road at 1am, 2am and 3am, operating the full route to Brixham Town Square. The journey will take one hour, and the fare is capped at £3.
The service is being funded solely by Torbay Council, unlike other night buses in Devon and Cornwall which are paid for by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, in partnership with local councils and businesses.
Councillor Hayley Tranter, Torbay Council’s cabinet member for Adult and Community Services, Public Health and Inequalities, said: “Extending this route into Newton Abbot will help more people get home safely after a night out.
“It will also benefit people working late into the evening such as shift workers or anyone working in hospitality.
“A strong night-time economy relies on safe and reliable transport and this night bus service is an important part of that.”
The new night bus is among several changes Stagecoach has made to the number 12 service. They come into effect from Sunday, May 24 with the start of the summer timetables.
- Intermediate running times revised across all days to improve reliability and punctuality
- Early morning timetable changes Monday to Friday, including additional and earlier journeys from Brixham towards Newton Abbot
- Minor early morning changes on Saturdays
- Sunday and Public Holiday daytime frequency increased from every 20 minutes to every 15 minutes, providing an additional journey each hour.
Stagecoach said its summer timetables introduce many service changes across the network, focusing on improving reliability, responding to customer demand, and supporting the busy summer season.
