TEIGNMOUTH is set for an urban renaissance in long-term plans by the district council.
There will be a focus on economic and social regeneration to make Teignmouth a better place to live and work.
There is an emphasis on supporting the coastline and its distinctive economy. Initiatives include enhancement of the sea front, back beach and the town centre, raising quality of tourism and safeguarding natural resources. It also wants to 'spread economic prosperity' by supporting existing business, attracting high value jobs and improving existing employment land.
Teignmouth is expected to take just 200 homes of the additional 1,700 planned as part of the district-wide local development framework.
Development is restricted in the town because of its location within the coastal protection area The council has also rejected the inclusion of Shaldon as part of Teignmouth's urban area.
It wants to classify it as a rural settlement to retain 'its unique character and distinctiveness'.
The plan is part of the district wide core strategy, and forms part of the local development framework.
Views are being sought for the proposed plans before it is finalised. Submissions should be made to Teignbridge Council by May.
