Despite freezing temperatures, revellers were out in force to celebrate the new year in Newton Abbot town centre.

Many got into the spirit of things by going out in big groups, dressed in fun fancy dress costumes on new year's eve.

The Jolly Farmer was extremely busy.

'It was a really good night and one of the best for trade in the year,' said Martin Baker, manager at the pub.

'Everyone was having fun and enjoyed the evening.'

Hundreds gathered at the town's clock tower at midnight to welcome the new decade.

PC Phil Williams, based at Newton Abbot police station, said partygoers were well behaved.

'It was a good natured affair. There were plenty of people around the clock tower to see in the new year and there were no problems,' he said. THERE were plenty of high spirits when new year revellers flocked on to the streets and packed the pubs and clubs in Teignmouth and Shaldon, but little trouble.

Police said it was one of the quietest festive periods for a long time and praised the good natured attitude of the vast majority of the crowds.

'It was strangely quiet over Christmas and new year and everybody seemed to be out to have a good time with plenty of humour. We had very little to do from the crime point of view,' said Sgt Mark Rushton, of Teignmouth police.

The numbers out and about celebrating were down on previous years no doubt due to a number of factors, including the recession and the cold weather.

Police were around in force to combat any public order offences, but only had to make one arrest for assault in the early hours of New year's Day. They also dealt with a youth who kicked out at a car, causing minor damage.

Many revellers spent a lot of time and thought into some imaginative and jolly fancy dress outfits and publicans also praised the good behaviour of most customers.
