FIREFIGHTERS from Newton Abbot were recently mobilised to Britain’s ocean city following reports of a chemical spill.
The station’s Environmental Protection Unit (EPU) were called into action on Friday afternoon after what was believed to be a Nitric acid spilled on the fourth floor of the University of Plymouth’ Davy building.
The building was promptly evacuated while crew entered wearing gas-tight suits and breathing apparatus.
The chemical leak involved a laboratory oven, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said.
A spokesperson for the University of Plymouth confirmed that nobody was injured as a result.
As a specialist decontamination and hazmat team, the Newton Abbot crew set up its MD4 structure, with its purpose built shower, to safely clean the firefighters who had entered the building.
