A CHURCH in Newton Abbot is offering a place for late night Christmas shoppers to ‘be still and find peace’ next Wednesday (December 9)

St Joseph’s RC Church, Queen Street, is open from 7.30pm to 9pm following the mayor’s carol service and during the late night shopping period.

A spokesman for the church said: ‘Our doors will be open for those who may like to pop in, light a candle, have a moment’s prayer or some quiet for a few minutes. A few members of our congregation will be in attendance both outside and inside the church.

‘As a parish we are marking the 50th anniversary of the 2nd Vatican Ecumenical Council and the opening of the Jubilee Year of Mercy called for by Pope Francis.’
