TEIGNMOUTH will have it’s nightclub back.

There has been a gap of three years since Kools in Northumberland Place closed, and clubbers had to travel to Newton Abbot or Torquay to get their kicks.

Now the derelict premises have been taken over and given an upgrade to reopen on Friday evening as Retro.

As the name suggests, it will specialise in ’60s, ’70s and ’80s music, and the businessman behind the venture has spent a year researching the viability and support for a night spot in Teignmouth, and reckons it will be a winner.

’I think there is a demand for this type of club in the resort, and I have had a phenomenal response from the public and business people I have spoken to about it. I did not want to rush into it, which is why I took a long hard look at Teignmouth to ensure it would be supported,’ said Chris Moulton.

’I was encouraged by other new businesses opening up here - including Wetherspoon - and decided to invest. Pubs around this area are supporting us because it will keep people in the town, which will benefit them as well.

’The club will be run professionally and strictly to ensure customers can come in to enjoy themselves without any trouble. There will be fully trained doorstaff, and we will be open on two levels, with dancing on the ground floor and a social lounge with music above.’

Mr Moulton, 39, has had 22 years experience in the licensed trade with pubs, clubs and hotels, and recently ran a nightspot in Torquay.

’There is a big demand for retro music now, not just from older people, but youngsters who seem to enjoy it as well.’

Retro will be open on Fridays, Saturdays and bank holidays until 2.30am, and the club will create 15 part time jobs.
