Teignbridge Oscar hopeful Guy Dyas left empty-handed from the Academy Award ceremony on Sunday.
Mr Dyas, son of Elizabeth and Bill Dyas, owners of the Devon Wildlife Hospital, Ogwell, was nominated for best art direction for his work on sci-fi psychological thriller Inception.
The award went to Alice in Wonderland.
His mum told the Advertiser before the ceremony at Sunset Tower Hotel, in West Hollywood, Los Angeles, that the 42-year-old thought his chances were slim because of his comparatively young age.
However, his work on Inception did receive recognition at the Baftas last month, where he won an award for best production design.
