Adrian Abbotts, of Waverley Lodge, Western Road, Ashburton, writes:
I read with sadness last week’s front page story that St Andrew’s Church graveyard is now at full capacity, though having known this for three years I am glad the issue is now being aired.
There is another issue in Ashburton with the difficulty of selling the old Kenwyn nursing home, and I cannot but think the grounds of Kenwyn would make an ideal and delightful graveyard with enough space to accommodate generations of Ashburtonians to come.
True, there would be costs in redeveloping the nursing home building itself which would be a basis for discussion (and I don’t know if these could in part be met by the Church for a chapel within the old building), but the sharp inclines of the site make it unsuitable for most other suggested purposes. It does seem like one solution to two problems.
