Teignmouth is planning its own relay run after news that the Olympic torch will not be carried into town.

And a genuine torch from the 1948 London games will be used to carry the flame from Shaldon Bridge to the seafront.

It is the resort's riposte to the disappointment of the official torch being carried across the bridge – partly by an Exeter teacher who lives in Exminster and by a Shaldon resident – before being driven to Exeter for the main celebrations on Sunday, May 20.

Pleas to bring the torch on to the Den, where huge celebrations are planned, were ignored by the London organising committee.
