Cllr Timothy Golder, ward member for Bishopsteignton, portfolio holder for economy, skills and tourism, Teignbridge District Council, writes:
I too was surprised and disappointed by the decision of Marks and Spencer to close its branch in Newton Abbot. We now know that the company has announced the closure of 100 stores across the country. It is not for me to speculate on the business case which led to this decision but would suggest that it perhaps says rather more about Marks and Spencer than it does about Newton Abbot.
Indeed, it should be remembered that Teignbridge District Council is investing heavily in various high profile projects in the town and is leading the transformation of its shopping centre at Market Walk, with a long term plan for creating jobs and improving prosperity.
With the support and goodwill of local people and organisations Newton Abbot is fast set to become one of the most dynamic and vibrant market towns in the county of Devon. The departure of any retailer is regretted but there are clear opportunities for others with the foresight to share our vision for the future.
