Brian Rittershausen, the Kingsteignton orchid grower who tasted gold medal success at the Chelsea Flower Show on numerous occasions, has died aged 74. Mr Rittershausen had recently suffered from poor health and following a fall at home was being treated at Torbay Hospital. He died on Thursday last week. The family business, Burnham Nurseries at Forches Cross, Newton Abbot, was established by Mr Rittershausen's parents in 1949. It is home to their unique permanent floral display, Orchid Paradise. The specialist growers have won more than 20 gold medals at Chelsea as well as gaining many more awards and plaudits from throughout the horticultural community. They attract customers from across the globe. The family's involvement with orchids was described earlier this year in a book written by Mr Ritterhausen's sister Wilma.
