Burnham Nurseries – the award-winning orchid nursery at Forches Cross, Newton Abbot – has decided not to exhibit at next week's Chelsea Flower Show. It is taking a break from the internationally famous event for several years as it devotes more time to the nursery business. Burnham has won 20 gold medals since l958 at the show but has now decided a breather is in order since finding it more difficult to afford the time needed to meet the show's exacting standards. Sara Rittershausen, whose family owns the business, confirmed this week it would not be showing, a decision which had been taken before last year's event. She said changing times, changing show needs, costs and staffing needs contributed to the decision.
