TWO men with Irish accents who smashed a double glazed window of a house in Kingskerswell with a rock, conned the elderly occupant into letting them in. They then searched every room of the property in Newton Road (A380), near Kerswell Arch, before making off, though police say it is not clear whether anything was taken. The man, in his late 70s, was resting on his bed when he heard glass breaking at the rear of his home at around 4.50pm on Wednesday last week. On investigating, he found a rock had been used to smash the bathroom window and saw a man outside beckoning him to go out, saying two naughty boys had caused the damage with a bat and had been caught up the road by a man in a van. The small-built white man, who is in his 20s, was about 5ft 4ins, had a little moustache and was wearing a dirty grey T-shirt with thin blue hoops and trousers cut off at the calves. He inquired if the elderly man was OK and asked him to go outside. As soon as the occupant opened the front door a second man appeared and ran past him into the house. Also white, he was aged about 45 years, 6ft and of stocky build. The men split up and searched the property, and the elderly man picked up the rock and shouted at them to get out. Police said that before the 20-year-old left the house he had threatened to 'smack' the senior citizen, who, having no telephone, went to his neighbour's for help. DC Timothy Lavercombe, of Newton Abbot CID, said the elderly man was shaken but fortunately unharmed. He warned householders, particularly the elderly, to be on their guard against distraction offences. 'Never let any unannounced callers into your property without first checking their identification thoroughly or better still telephone the company they are alleged to be from. 'If in any doubt, do not let them in and call the police. 'We do not want people to feel that they are prisoners in their own homes, but now that the summer is upon us it is vital to make sure that all windows and doors are secure, when going out,' he added. Anyone who recognises their descriptions, or saw them near the house between 4.50pm and 5.05pm on Wednesday last week, is asked to contact DC Lavercombe, at Newton Abbot police station, via the central switchboard number 08452 777444, quoting the crime reference number JN/06/1728.
