IT was PANDEMONIUM in Dawlish when one of the animals from the seafront safari mini golf made a bid for freedom.

The attraction is currently a construction site as part of South West Water’s multi-million scheme to improve water quality in the town.

While the work is underway, the plastic animals have been herded up for safekeeping.

But it was reported a group of individuals was seen climbing into the compound and removing one of the giant panda figures before carrying it off along Marine Parade.

A witness said: ‘Just watched a group of people climbing into the crazy golf in Dawlish took panda out of the premises and walked down Marine Parade with it.’

It is understood police were informed of the incident but it is not known if a ‘panda’ car was dispatched.

Meanwhile Dawlish resident Colin Homeward had spotted the animals gathering at their ‘watering hole’ at the coffee kiosk.

He said: ‘Sadly for most of them wanting a cup of tea they were disappointed but Gemma the giraffe was luckier as she found an ice cream.’

The animals have divided opinion since the mini golf opened in 2018.

Some have described them as ‘tacky’ while others believe they are a fun addition to the seaside which attract children and families.

One resident commented that the area looked like a commercial theme park but another said children love the area and that the animals provided a photo opportunity for visitors.

Another commented: ‘As much as the Gorillas made me smile, it made Dawlish look like an amusement park as you got off the train.’
