Residents of Widecombe-in-the-Moor were united against proposals to construct a Tetra mast in the village at a public meeting in the village hall on Tuesday. The parishioners turned up in droves to discuss whether the construction for an O2 Airwaves Tetra mast would be welcomed in the village. None of the 54 residents were in favour of the mast. Two abstained from voting. There have already been several applications for a Tetra mast in the village and all have been refused. Widecombe Parish Council vice-chairman, Cllr Rod Newbolt-Young, chaired the meeting and stated the mast wasn't wanted in the village. 'The parish council has objected, the school governors from Widecombe Primary School have objected and now all those at the meeting have objected,' he said after the meeting. 'O2 Airwave has offered to meet with the council in private, but the Council believes this matter should be kept public.' County Cllr Sally Morgan also attended the meeting and supported parishioners wishes not to have the mast. 'The hall was packed out, and it was standing room only,' said Cllr Morgan. 'The meeting was a useful activity and showed that the community do not want a mast in the village and I am very much behind them. 'There have been applications submitted before, so now we just have to wait and see where they will apply to put it next.' At the meeting, Cllr Morgan also read out a letter from Teignbridge MP Richard Younger-Ross regarding the issue. 'He said in the letter that he was supporting the community on this matter and expressed concerns about safety and technology with regards to the mast,' she said.
