Wendy Sanders, of Broadway Avenue, Kingsteignton, writes:
I, like Mr Buckle, am wondering what is to be gained by closing the Butter Market and the Market Walk.
After spending thousands on renovating and improving both of the above and altering the layout of our so-called bus station, all these monies are to be wasted. I honestly cannot see the Butter Market building being used on a regular basis as a musical venue.
Like all buildings of this size, unless the heating is kept on during the colder months it would soon become a damp, unwelcoming place.
Our bus station is rubbish compared with most places, but at least it is reasonably central. If it was moved to the Wolborough Street car park, much of the town now easily reachable by the elderly would no longer be visited by them and most of the workers who are reliant on the buses would have to trek much further.
The ideal solution to parking problems would be a park and ride system but that is a pipe dream. However, unlike the rest of you, the people of Kingsteignton can look forward to their own park and charge.
They will be able to park up at East Gold and, regardless of the weather, they will then walk to the Newton Road and wait hopefully for a bus that still has enough room for them to jump on board. Otherwise they will have to wait for the next one, or maybe even the next. Many Kingstegnton folk may not be aware of this idea – it was one of the plans passed by Teignbridge Council. Isn't it brilliant?
I can see our workers on a wet, freezing cold winter's morning vieing for one of the 200 parking places. Then pushing and shoving for a place on a bus, followed by an exhilarating walk to work. We all know that arriving at work soaked to the skin is everyone's dream of a good start to the day.
But hopefully everyone will be nice and dry by the time they leave. They will all be keen to stagger through the still pouring rain and gale force winds to the new bus station near Asda where they can once again wait for a bus.
Maybe I am getting cynical in my old age, but is the idea to remove most of the convenient car parks in the town the first step to forcing people to leave their cars elsewhere?
If so, folks from the south, east and west of Newton Abbot could soon be joining us lucky northerners with their own park and charge which in the light of day is fair. After all, why should only a few arrive wet at their destination?THIS AND OTHER LETTERS IN OUR ONLINE EDITION
