Cllr MIke Walters, of Kingsteignton Town Council, writes:

Fore Street Saga:

The town council fully sympathises with the Winsborrow family, but wishes for solutions which address the provision of safe footpaths for the whole length of Fore Street.

It is felt that the scheme presented by Cllr John Smith did not fully address the problem of pavement provision.

The latest plan, which had only recently been put forward to the town council, proposed that the enhancement, including pavement widening, should only be made in the stretch of Fore Street between the junction of Tarrs Lane and Crossley Moor Road. Cllr Smith stated that if the town council did not agree to this then he would withhold the finances and said the money would go elsewhere.

What was not made clear in the article on April 10 was that the most dangerous stretch was from Crossley Moor Road to the school. This has constant two-way traffic. The council was told that there would be two phases and there was no certainty of the second phase – where the pavements are extremely narrow – being funded in the foreseeable future. Hence the deferment, and not abandonment, of the scheme as far as the council was concerned.
