A PEDESTRIAN seriously injured in a road accident on the Teignmouth to Dawlish road last week has died in hospital.
He has been named locally as Steve McKay, 58, from Newton Abbot.
Mr McKay, a retired hospital porter, was walking along the A379 when he was critically injured in collision with a Citroen at Holcombe on December 1.
He was flown by air ambulance to Plymouth’s Derriford Hospital after suffering serious head injuries.
He died at the hospital on Sunday.
Mr McKay, whose late father Ted was a post office inspector based in Newton Abbot, suffered from a lifelong eye condition.
Three years ago he took part in a 15-mile night-time walk in Cardiff to raise money for the Fight for Sight charity which helps victims of nystagmus, a condition which affects eye movements.
An inquest into Mr McKay’s death is expected to open in Plymouth early next week.
A full inquest is likely to be held next year.
The accident caused huge tailbacks of traffic and prompted police to criticise some motorists for their impatience and lack of sympathy during the ensuing delays.
