AN 89-YEAR-OLD man escaped unharmed after accidentally reversing his car through the back of his garage into a river 8ft below in Kingskerswell.

The pensioner was rescued by Torquay firefighters after the accident in Manor Drive at 11.30am today Friday).

He was hoping to drive forwards out of the pre-fabricated garage entrance when he suddenly found himself careering in the opposite direction into the shallow river at the back of his property.

The driver was able to scramble into the back of his vehicle in 1ft of water before firefighters extricated him and escorted him safely back to dry land up a ladder.

A fire spokesman said: ‘He was perfectly fine afterwards. Paramedics checked him over to make sure was OK.’
