In 1953 the author L P Hartley coined the phrase, ‘the past is a foreign country; they do things differently there’, when he wrote The Go Between, writes Steve Harris.

It is a phrase which has acquired an almost proverbial status and when I first set eyes on this week’s two photographs, passed to me by KHS member Sandra Full, my first thought was that this was some ‘foreign’ place with which I was unfamiliar. A nagging feeling set in that I had seen these views before but I could not for the life of me remember where.
