THIS week I have selected another view of Highweek Street, but this view is looking down the street towards the town centre, writes Steve Harris.
Many older Newtonians and others from the surrounding district will recognise the former Seven Stars Public House on the right. It closed in 1978 in advance of the impending demolition of numerous properties in Highweek Street and Exeter Road, as part of a new traffic scheme for the town. The picture shows it at the time this view was recorded as selling St Anne’s Ales which were probably supplied by the St Anne’s Well Brewery, of Exeter.
The public house was thought to be one of the oldest in the town.
