A 66-BED extension to a Teignbridge hotel has been given the thumbs up by planners for the second time.

Eight years ago the plans, to extend Kennford’s Gisson Hotel and Restaurant, were passed and on Tuesday a revised document was before Teignbridge’s planning committee.

Unhappy councillors who didn’t want permission to be given at all felt like they were ‘being held to ransom’ because permission had already been given by delegated staff.

Cllr Ros Prowse, who branded the site as tacky and untidy, said: ‘I find it sad that this committee is being held to ransom.’

She had serious concerns about drainage and traffic getting in and out of the hotel.

Business manager Nick Davies was adamant the committee wasn’t being held to ransom and said: ‘You need to decide if you want the revised scheme or one already given.’

The new plans, which will see the 21-bedroom hotel triple in size, feature changes in design and elevation.

Mr Davies said the three storey extension has a much better-design and a precedent had been set.

‘I can’t see how we could justify refusal,’ he said.

Ward member Cllr John Goody said: ‘Residents are horrified at the idea and it would completely change the character of Kennford.’

One letter of support and 12 letters of objection raising concerns about it being out of character with the area, air pollution and overlooking, were sent to the council.

The 18 members voted unanimously in favour of passing the plans.
