The multi-million pound redevelopment of the old Newton Abbot Hospital looks likely to be given the go-ahead on Monday.

If councillors meeting at Forde House accept the recommendation by planning officers to grant permission it will signal the start of one of the biggest elements in the town's ongoing regeneration project.

On the cards for the 8.5-acre estate off East Street are more than 50 dwellings, a 48-bed retirement home, retail units and possibly a cafe, dental practice, GP surgery and vets.

The scheme has been proposed by Keyworker Homes (Newton Abbot) Ltd and follows the opening of the new £25 million NHS facility at Jetty Marsh in January 2009.
