BIDS have been submitted for aircraft to appear in next year’s Teignmouth Air Show.

But the small organising team will have to wait until early next year before they know which planes have been allocated for the 2022 show.

Fundraising has started in earnest to pay for the event which is due to take place on the first weekend in July.

It will cost about £50,000 to pay for the aircraft alone.

The whole event is expected to cost at least £75,000.

The first, and last, air show was held in 2019 as the Covid pandemic meant the team were unable to run events in the last two years.

Last year’s show had to be cancelled which was ‘devastating’ as they had been allocated the iconic Red Arrows.

Chairman Dave Matthews said: ‘It’s early days yet as we won’t know what will be allocated until about February then we have until March to get the money.

‘But we have submitted our bids to the RAF and Royal Navy so we’ve made the first steps.

‘The worst thing last year was we had been allocated the Red Arrows so we were devastated when we had to cancel.

‘We need to get something back on in the town and make it alive and kicking.’

The 2019 inaugural air show attracted more than 20,000 spectators.

Director Tracy Scranage said: ‘We’re now frantically fundraising. When we know which planes we are getting, we’ll know how much money we need.

‘We have already got the £20,000 profit we made from 2019.

‘There have been some concerns over the environmental effects but these planes need flying hours so they may as well come here and bring people into the town.

‘So now it’s all systems go.’

The committee has approached Teignmouth Town Council for financial support.

The team already has infrastructure such as road signage and a marquee from the first show.

Now they need volunteers, sponsors and advertisers for the programme.

Supporters can sign up on the air show website to become a friend of the show for an annual fee for which they receive exclusive updates.

The first fundraiser is the Big Quiz Night being held on Saturday, November 20, at Bitton House.
