NEWTON Abbot’s first honoury freeman will be forever remembered by the town he dedicated so much of his time to with a commemorative plaque, which was unveiled on Sunday, August 14.

Henry Cole, former mayor of Newton Abbot and the towns first honoury freeman, passed away last August at the age of 90.

The town councillor served as mayor in 2000/2001 and it was during Henry’s term as mayor that the now beloved summer band concerts began at Courtenay Park.

It was only fitting, therefore, for the plaque to be fixed to the bandstand, which saw a performance by ‘Bay Brass’ dedicated to his memory on the same day.

Newton Abbot mayor, Cllr Carol Bunday, invited the family of the late Henry Cole, to join her in unveiling a commemorative plaque which the Town Council, with permission from Teignbridge District Council, had placed on the bandstand.

The plaque was unveiled by Henry’s son Ian who said a few words on behalf of the family, to thank the Town Council and the people of the town.
