Three local police officers and a civilian have raised £350 for the cystic fibrosis charity by walking more than 70 miles in the Lake District in five days. PC Dick Scagell and DC Tim Lavercombe, who are based at Newton Abbot Police Station, PC Andy Dudley, who – based at Ashburton Police Station along with Steve Bearne – decided to take on the challenge of walking Cumbria Way for the charity. The 72-mile route started at Ulverston and ended in Carlisle. 'It was brilliant,' said PC Scagell. 'It was a fabulous adventure and we raised money for the charity, which is great. 'We met some really friendly people, stayed in hostels and had to put up with many snorers along the way,' he joked. 'Myself and Andy also took some optional tracks and climbed eight mountains, so we definately did more than the 72 miles. We went up Skiddaw and we could see the Isle of Man and Scotland as it was so clear.' PC Scagell, who recently also took part in the Dartmoor Jailbreak, thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. 'I can't see the point in doing something like this, unless you do it for a good cause as it gives you a reason to keep going. 'Next year, we'll be doing more fundraising for charity, hopefully going to the continent, possibly Spain.'
