TEIGNMOUTH'S police chief has thanked new year's eve revellers for behaving so well.

Hundreds were out on the streets of the town and Shaldon – but only two arrests were made for minor offences.

'That was fewer than we often get on a normal Friday or Saturday night,' said a delighted Insp Chris Shaw, who was out and about with his team until the early hours.

A 38-year-old man, who refused to leave a pub where he was causing problems, and a 16-year-old youth who was found well under the influence in the street, were charged with being drunk and disorderly.

A total of 13 officers – including Specials and community support officers – patrolled the town centre area until 4am. They did sterling work early in the night confiscating booze from under-age drinkers to try to defuse potential problems.
