MORE than 200,000 Notices of Intended Prosecution (NIPs) for speeding offences were issued by Devon & Cornwall Police during 2025.

This is according to figures released under the Freedom of Information Act.

The data, which includes notices issued by police officers as well as fixed and mobile speed cameras, shows the highest number of offences occurred in 30mph zones, where 118,749 NIPs were issued.

A further 39,266 notices were recorded in 70mph areas, while 24,458 were issued in 20mph zones.

Police also issued 11,330 notices in 60mph limits, 10,254 in 50mph zones and 9,809 in 40mph areas.

Drivers who receive a Notice of Intended Prosecution must complete the accompanying Section 172 notice within 28 days, identifying who was driving the vehicle.

Failure to do so is a criminal offence.

Depending on the circumstances, motorists may be offered a speed awareness course, a fixed penalty or, in more serious cases, face prosecution through the courts.
