Newton Abbot Police will put extra patrols on the streets at weekends in an initiative to stamp out the increasing problems of anti-social behaviour and criminal damage in the town. The police are aware that many of these crimes are being carried out by young people during early evening and particularly at weekends. They have also noted that revellers have been involved in causing damage, in particular to vehicles, on their way home from licensed premises. These extra police patrols will be trying to put a stop to these crimes and also hope to catch offenders in the act. The operation, known as Damsay, is in addition to the ongoing operation that is already in place to tackle alcohol-related problems within the area. 'We ask that members of public who own vehicles park off-road and secure them where it is possible to do so,' said PC Dick Scagell. 'We have arranged extra policing resources during the remainder of the summer months in order to pay particular attention to the problem areas. CCTV will be fully utilised during this operation. 'We encourage people to come to the area to enjoy themselves, but unruly behaviour and criminal offences will not be tolerated. 'Anyone behaving unruly or found committing damage will be arrested and can expect a court appearance or, if circumstances dictate, they will be issued with an £80 fixed penalty notice.'
