VISITORS to Teignmouth’s Blue Light Day were given the chance to see Devon & Cornwall Police’s newly branded ‘Crop Cop’ tractor as officers promoted rural crime prevention and responsible dog ownership.

The tractor, which made its debut appearance in the seaside town on Monday, proved a popular attraction at The Den, where families gathered as part of Teignmouth Carnival Week.

Alongside the eye-catching vehicle, officers from the Teignmouth neighbourhood policing team spoke to members of the public about issues affecting rural communities, including livestock worrying and fly-tipping.

They also answered questions about local policing and offered advice on staying safe while visiting the countryside.

Police Community Support Officers Saul Bunce and Liz Francis were joined by PC George Miller and Rural Affairs Officer PC Clarke Orchard throughout the event.

PC Orchard said the busy summer season brings thousands of visitors to Devon’s countryside and coastal beauty spots, many of which are home to grazing livestock.

‘We are mindful that during the busy summer period we have a large footfall of tourists and visitors in our lovely rural locations and beauty spots’, he said.

‘Some of these locations are likely to have livestock present, which is why it was key for us to remind owners about the importance of keeping dogs on leads when walking in areas near livestock or where they are likely to be.

‘This advice applies all year round’.

He added that the event also provided an opportunity to highlight recent changes to legislation aimed at protecting farm animals.

Under the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) (Amendments) Act 2025, which came into force on March 18, alpacas and llamas are now legally recognised as livestock.

The changes also introduce tougher penalties, with owners found guilty of irresponsible dog ownership facing unlimited fines.

Livestock worrying occurs when dogs attack, chase or otherwise distress farm animals.

Police say that even without making physical contact, behaviours such as barking or stalking can cause animals significant stress and suffering.
