VOTERS in Teignbridge are being urged to make sure they are registered to cast their vote in the imminent county council elections.

The call for voters to sign up comes as the Electoral Commission launches a national voter registration campaign to encourage as many people as possible to register ahead of elections taking place this year across the country.

Teignbridge residents will need to register by the deadline of April 13 otherwise they won’t be able to have their say on their county council representative in the local elections on May 4.

The election of councillors to the county authority will be held on new county division boundaries.

In Teignbridge, they are: Ashburton and Buckfastleigh, Bovey Rural, Chudleigh and Teign Valley, Dawlish, Exminster and Haldon, Ipplepen and The Kerswells, Kingsteignton and Teign Estuary, Newton Abbot North, Newton Abbot South and Teignmouth.

Following a review conducted by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE) the number of county divisions within Teignbridge was reduced from 11 to 10.

Nicola Bulbeck, deputy returning officer for Teignbridge, said: ‘Time is running out to make sure you can take part in elections this May, so I’d encourage everyone in Teignbridge to take action now if they’re not already registered to vote.

‘It’s quick and easy to register, but after the deadline of 13 April, it will be too late.’

Emma Hartley, head of campaigns at the electoral commission said: ‘Our research shows that young people, students and recent home movers are particularly less likely to be registered to vote.

‘So if you have moved house recently, then make sure you’re registered correctly.

‘If you’re not registered, you won’t be able to have your say on issues that directly affect your day-to-day life in Teignbridge.’
