A pot buoy mistaken for a person in the water prompted a call out for Teignmouth RNLI on Saturday (July 20).

Solent Coastguard tasked volunteer crew from Teignmouth RNLI along with Dawlish Coastguard and the Exmouth RNLI inshore lifeboat to respond to reports of a person in the water off Coryton Cove near Dawlish.

Four volunteer crew from Teignmouth RNLI launched on board the Atlantic 85 Claude and Kath and carried out a coordinated search.

The object spotted turned out to be a pot buoy and nobody was in danger.

A Teignmouth RNLI spokesperson said: ‘We would always rather someone call the Coastguard if they think they’ve seen someone in trouble. It’s far better to be safe and check it out, every second counts in an emergency.’
