YOUNGSTERS at Highweek Primary School, Newton Abbot, are preparing for their Christmas gift and craft market.
The children at the primary and nursery schools are getting involved in the event which takes place on Tuesday between 2.30pm and 5pm at the school in Coronation Road, Newton Abbot.
The free market will feature hand-crafted, individual and locally produced gifts and stocking fillers.
As well as stalls and games organised by the children, there will be chocolate tombola, along with stalls by traders including floral arrangements, portrait photography and manicures.
Raffle prizes include tickets for Woodlands adventure park, a golf day for four people, a meal at the Elburton Inn and other gifts and vouchers donated by local businesses which have supported the event.
Judy Martyn, headteacher, said: ‘We’re delighted that the children have been involved and are part of this community event.
‘It is strengthening their understanding of enterprise and provides cross-curriculum activities at this festive time.’
Emma Woodward, secretary of the Friends of Highweek, which is organising the fair, said: ‘We are very proud of our links with local craftspeople and businesses many of whom are parents or former parents at the school and couldn’t be more thrilled to be putting on this event, which will see a host of unique products on sale in our own school hall as well as amazing prizes donated for the raffle.’
The market has been organised by the Friends, the school’s parent teacher group, which is a fundraising committee run by parents of children at the school and some staff.
Together they work to offer a range of events and activities and the funds raised provide extras for the children.
Currently they are aiming to raise £5,000 towards a new library.
