The mayor of Newton Abbot, Cllr Daphne Watts, told a packed Market Walk on Wednesday afternoon, that she was pleased to see so many people in town. The crowds had gathered in warm conditions for the opening of this year's incarnation of the traditional Cheese and Onion Fair, which now incorporates displays of arts, crafts and gardening expertise. Teignbridge MP Richard Younger-Ross, was present and became the successful bidder when his £30 secured the giant pasty being auctioned off in aid of the mayor's charities, The Stroke Association and Teignbridge Young Carers. The MP took the pasty back to his local pub in Teignmouth, where he intended to sell portions in aid of the Bobby Wright Cancer Appeal and the Helen Foundation.
