FUNDRAISING efforts in Dawlish and Teignmouth have raised more than £30,000 to help a three-year-old suffering from cancer.
Little Bobby Wright, from Kenn, has neuroblastoma, an aggressive and rare form of childhood cancer. His family is trying to raise £200,000 to send him for pioneering antibody treatment only available in the United States. Bobby was taken to hospital on March 19, 2005, complaining of an aching leg. He was diagnosed with cancer two months later. A massive fundraising campaign was launched and celebrity spoon bender Uri Gellar even got involved, helping to sort out accommodation for Bobby and his family when they went to America for face-to face consultations with specialists last month. The overall amount raised so far is almost £130,000 and it is anticipated that the target will be reached by the end of summer. Mr Wright said: 'The people of Dawlish and Teignmouth have been instrumental in helping raise the money. Many have been involved in fundraising events and many shops and businesses have our collection tins, for which we are very grateful. 'The public's response from both towns has been tremendous, and many are still actively raising money for Bobby, which is fantastic,' He gave a special mention to the Special People Fund of Dawlish. Bobby's health is stable, but he has recently been complaining of stomach problems – something that can be caused by pressure from tumours. He was taken for an ultrasound on Monday. With the tourist season approaching, Mr Wright now hopes to get collection tins at campsites in the area. 'If we could get them in there then we should hopefully be able to raise a substantial amount,' he said.
