The opening of Teignmouth's new £4 million flood defences takes place today.

The scheme will protect the back beach and low lying town centre from the threat of flooding, lifting the blight on more than 600 properties, with many owners finding insurance cover expensive or even unobtainable.

The works include new flood defence walls, flood gates and ramps and steps to provide access to the quays and foreshore. ??

James Morrish, chairman of the South West regional Flood and Coastal Committee, said: 'We have worked closely with the community during the design and construction of the scheme and we are delighted that it has been completed.
