GERALDINE GASKELL, of Newton Abbot, writes:

I must not smirk and say ‘told you so’ because all those years ago when Asda first approached the town to build here, I said we didn’t need them.

How did it play out. First they bought Seymour Horwell and the Pascoe and Gill premises to build the shops and accommodation at the end of Wolborough Street, then it was ‘No, not big enough’ so they bought Wadham Stringer and were going to build there, but it would be too expensive to move the underground services, so guess what they bought Eggintons and moved over there.

I was against it and pointed out that their parent company over in the States does just the same thing every time. The plot they really want is the final one, oh yes, and I said ‘in a few years they’ll put in for a petrol station’.

Noise, smell, and worst of all traffic congestion... sorry, I forgot they’ll give £5,000 towards traffic monitoring, yippee! What on earth is Teignbridge District Council up to?

We have serious issues with traffic as it is in the town. We also have petrol stations all within easy reach of each other, one of which is around the corner from Asda and has been for many years.

We also have numerous empty shop buildings – what does that tell you? And an overload of supermarkets – Tesco, Lidl, Sainsbury’s, Asda and the soon to arrive Aldi.

I’ve just had a corking idea. What about the old job centre? That could be Morrisons, and the Alexandra Cinema could be Waitrose – there you are a full set.
