Children from St Michael's Primary School, Kingsteignton, have contacted the Mid-Devon Advertiser series, expressing anger at the closure of Decoy Park Paddling Pool. In a letter to this newspaper, five pupils from the school stated that they loved using the pool and did not want the district council to close it down. At present, Teignbridge Council has closed the pool as it is believed to be a health and safety risk. Proposals are in place to replace the pool with a £120,000 wet play area. Work would begin on the new wet play section at the end of March and it would be similar to the one on the Den, Teignmouth. Despite the council's efforts, the children from St Michael's do not want to see the facility shut down. 'Our paddling pool is better than the fountains at Teignmouth as there is enough room for everyone to play in the water, even our little brothers and sisters,' the pupils said in the letter. 'Please can you help us because it is the best paddling pool around.' A Teignbridge council spokesman said: 'We are committed to providing excellent play and recreation facilities in Teignbridge, and we believe that the proposed wet play area at Decoy will achieve this aim. 'The current outdoor paddling pool poses a potential health and safety risk as it is open to contaminants; and is extremely difficult to maintain. There were a number of instances of it being shut down last summer, and it is felt that the area would benefit from a more reliable feature. 'The new-style wet play has already proved incredibly popular at the state-of-the-art Teignmouth Den play area, and the public consultation on the Decoy scheme came back with a large majority of respondents in favour of the new area. 'We understand that there may be some initial disappointment, but in this case we are convinced that this course of action is in the best interest of our customers and will provide hours of fun for our young people.'
