A Kingsteignton group which supports patients at the town's medical practice has been given the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.

The honour – the MBE for community groups – has been presented to the KingsCare League of Friends which was launched in 1997 when volunteer drivers were needed to bring patients to the surgery.

Within six years it was granted charitable status and now has 50 volunteers who provide a memory cafe, befriending, lunch club, tea and chats and more.

The Queen's Award, one of just 112 given in Diamond Jubilee year, was presented to KingsCare for its 'therapeutic social activities, transport, befriending and holistic care to patients in Kingsteignton'.<
