HUNDREDS turned out at the Pavilions Teignmouth on Tuesday to find out more about how the fragile main rail line is going to be protected in years to come.
Network Rail has come up with various options for shoring up the vulnerable track between Starcross and Teignmouth, and the details were on show at a special exhibition.
All the schemes will cost millions of pounds, and involve stabilising the sandstone cliffs which are prone to collapse during heavy rains, and strengthening the sea defences. Most winters, parts of the line are closed because of large waves crashing over the sea wall, and it means that the only rail route into south Devon and Cornwall can be blocked for long periods, at great cost to the economy.
Experts from Network Rail were on hand to go through the options and explain the implications, costings and time scale for the projects.
