DESPITE a forecast of rain and the unscheduled appearance of a swarm of bees, record numbers attended Kingsteignton's ram roasting fair on Monday.
Memories of last year's wash-out were soon forgotten as about 7,000 people enjoyed themselves in what turned out to be glorious sunshine for much of the day.
And early indications are that the total money raised for local charities will far exceed last year's total.
Secretary of the ram roasting fair Loraine Stacey said: 'The event was a great success and it was wonderful to see so many people enjoying themselves.
'My grateful thanks go to local businesses, volunteers, residents and visitors – who all played their part in a fantastic event.'
She gave special mention to the Grimspound Border Morris dancers who, having delighted the crowds with two excellent displays, helped tackle a swarm of bees that decided to make a new home on the recorder's table during the sports events.
'The professional beekeepers in their team were very quick to mollify the situation, for which we are extremely grateful,' said Mrs Stacey.
Before the festivities at Oakford Lawn started at 1pm, an open air service of thanksgiving took place, conducted by Catherine Harris of the United Reformed Church.
Tony Beard, the Wag from Widecombe, opened the event after being introduced by the new Kingsteignton town crier, Roov Andrew, who attended with wife Jan.
As ever the Jungle Jim comedy show proved to be one of the most popular attractions along with the donkeys and the ferret racing.
Tiana Bearne, of St Michael's School, was crowned May Queen, with her attendants Anya Ford and Esme Harris, of Rydon School.
The Maypole dancing display that followed added a great deal of colour to the afternoon.
Once again the stalls enjoyed good takings and the ram roast rolls had all been eaten by mid-afternoon.
Mrs Stacey said: 'The committee are now looking forward to taking on board the comments received this year to produce an even better event in 2010.'
