► ADVERTISING FEE

There was a gasp of horror when members of the Teignmouth Urban Council received a suggestion from the auctioneers Body Son and Fleury should spend £500 advertising the sale of land at Rowdens and Exeter Road.

‘I think this is most iniquitous,’ said Mr Arthur Bladon.

‘I cannot understand why it is necessary to spend £500 to get rid of a piece of land that people want to buy.’

It was agreed that £250, the same amount as last year, should be spent.

► CYCLE SHOP DOOMED

The Teignmouth Urban Council has been criticised over the position of tenants to be dispossessed as the result of demolition of property for the new road. Mr Morris, the chairman, said: ‘We did visit the cycle shop to see if we could find a permanent place.

The tenant knew full well, 10 or 11 years ago, that this has to come down. I think he has had plenty of time. Nevertheless, the council feel that this type of business is needed in the town, and have looked around to try and find him something. People are blaming us when it is the Devon County Council.’

► ELECTION MANIFESTO

From W E Cole, Independent: I am very much against the possibility of the electorate being bludgeoned into the acceptance of any form of local dictatorship associated with personal vested interest, this assumed practice must now be brought to an abrupt end.

During the past decade, Teignmouth has become a shanty town of experimental demolitions, making way for racing tracks in order to appease the motor monster of the future – at the same time having the least regard to public safety.

This wanton destruction of good habitable dwellings will continue far beyond the agreed road development scheme if no constructive effort is brought about at Devon County level to check it. Teignmouth’s sewage disposal system is at present sub-standard, and a potential health hazard.

► FAMOUS FLAG THROWERS

The Devon County Agricultural Show has obtained the attraction of the Flag Throwers of Arezzo, the ancient centre of Etruscan and Roman civilisation. The show is at Whipton, Exeter, on May 17, 18 and 19.

The centuries’ old displays come on jousts, tournaments and horse races in some of the oldest European cities .

Every year, in Arezzo, the Joust of the Saracen, la Giostra del Saracino, is held, a mediaeval competition in which horsemen joust against a mechanical target – the Saracen. The Flag Men will be in 14th century costumes, the banners bearing the arms of the castles, in complex synchronised evolutions.

► WISE WORDS

Joy which we cannot share with others is only half enjoyed.  Don’t rest on your laurels, they make a poor mattress.

► CLIFF RESCUE

By the light of torches, two policemen and two men last weekend rescued a boy from the cliff above the railway line at Spray Point. Martin Archard, aged 13, from Exeter, was unharmed  but extremely frightened by his experience.

► SCOUTS BOB-A-JOB WEEK

Following their operation Shoe Shine last year, sponsored by a shoe polish company, the Scouts are adding a Car Clean Campaign. So they will be looking for dirty shoes and dirty cars to clean.
