SHALDON regatta kicked off in style on Sunday with a record number of entries in the traditional opening of the Dawlish to Shaldon marathon row. Fifty-three boats with 99 competitors took part in the race that was held in excellent conditions with an off shore breeze, high tide and clear skies. It was a competitive race with various trophies up for grabs in the different categories. The Chirney Cup for the Men's Pairs was finally won by Tommy Stoyle and Ed Rawlings in a good time of 451/2 minutes who took the lead at the start of the race and stayed in front through out thus improving on their third place the year before. The Sarah Jane Cup for ladies was won for a third year running by Kate Barczock and Sandrine Haydred while the over 55s pair's trophy, the Ray Edworthy Cup, was won once again by the donator Ray Edworthy and his partner Rod Pash. The Leander Cup for under 16s was won by cousins Georgina Pile and Hattie Stoyle who rowed a wonderful race considering their ages and managed to keep up with the majority of the older rowers. Seasoned rowers Sue Heath and James Ashton who rowed a fine race and actually crossed the line seconds after the Chirney Cup winners won the Deborah Tosio Memorial Trophy. The event was followed by the official opening by regatta president John Pile. Monday afternoon was off the water and on to the beach for another competitive tournament of Beach Rounders for the Simons Trophy in which teams of six play to the strict Shaldon Rules. It was followed by the first of the Otter Sailing races. Events continue throughout the week.
