DAWLISH Repertory Company found during its pantomime, Dick Whittington, that it is not only the streets of London that are paved with gold – but those in Dawlish as well.

Dawlish Rep was presented with a cheque for £1,500 by the chairman of Dawlish and Teignmouth Round Table, David Jose, in aid of the Shaftsbury Quest, during the interval

This money represented a third of the proceeds of the highly successful abseil from St Gregory's Church last October, which was organised by club president David Force.

Ian Wedlake, chairman of the theatre company, expressed his gratitude to the Round Tablers and vowed that the fund-raising would continue, as £400,000 has to be found in order to carry out vital improvements to the theatre.

At the same time, 90-years- young Harry Diprose was presented with a litre bottle of whisky in recognition of his splendid £500 total amount raised for his abseil.

Harry said that he was delighted to have made his successful descent, but from now on he would be keeping his feet firmly on the ground.

Further presentations from the remainder of the abseil fund will be presented to Gatehouse School and St Gregory's Church, Dawlish.
