More than a thousand Teignbridge residents have backed proposals for a community group to run Teignmouth Lido this summer.
A petition, created by Teignmouth Lido Community Trust, also known as Save the Lido – Teignmouth, has already attracted over 1000 signatures since it was created on Tuesday (February 17).
The group is asking Teignbridge District Council to allow it to run the outdoor pool this summer.
Earlier this month, Teignbridge District Council Executive Committee voted to close the Lido ahead of selling off the site at the East Cliff end of Teignmouth seafront.
Teignbridge District Council argued that closing the pool for the summer would save £74,000.
However, Teignmouth Lido Community Trust said closing would be ‘catastrophic’ for future generations.
‘We’ve created this petition to make Teignbridge District Council aware of residents’ feelings,’ explained Teignmouth Lido Community Trust trustee Paul Burgess.
‘Teignmouth Lido has been a cherished community resource since it opened in 1976 and has played an invaluable role in the lives of countless visitors and residents,’ he added.
