AIR pollution levels along the old A380 at Kingskerswell have been halved since the opening of the South Devon Highway, it’s been revealed.
The reduction has been welcomed by Teignbridge councillors who say the cleaner air is good news for local residents.
Figures have revealed that nitrogen dioxide rates have dropped by nearly 50 per cent so far this year.
The local authority has been keeping tabs on pollution levels locally since the advent of the new road.
Cllr Mike Haines told the council’s highways and traffic orders committee that the better air was a bonus for the health of local residents relieved of the heavy traffic flow over the last eight months.
Cllr Sheila Cook agreed, saying the reduction was ‘highly beneficial.’
If the low pollution levels are maintained over the next three years, Teignbridge can apply for the revocation of the air quality management area for the community.
